Sania Mirza’s retirement, end of an era

Hyderabad: Ace Indian Tennis Superstar Sania Mirza who inspired millions by taking up on Tennis in a cricket centric Country declared 2022 will be her final season on the WTA tour post her first-round loss in women’s doubles at the Australian open 2022 on wednesday.

Concerning over her time taking recovery to facing difficulties being a mother of three year old travelling in this pandemic she had to decide claims Mirza.
Mirza born in 1986 took up the career in 2003 and retired from singles in 2013 following injuries is a former doubles World No.1 also bags 6 grand slam titles.

 

Sania, 35 her Ukranian partner Nadiia Kichenok,faced a defeat against Slovenian pair Kaja Juvan and Tamar Zidansek by 4-6, 6-7.

While speaking to the broadcasters after the match at Melbourne Park Sania said “There’s a few reason for it. It’s not as simple as ‘Okay I’m not going to play’ I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I’m putting my three year old son at risk by travelling somuch with him, that something I have to take an account. I think my body is wearing down. My knees were really hurting today and I’m not saying that’s the reason we lost. But I do think that it is taking time to recover as I am getting older”.


She also said that the energy is not the same now as time is passing by and she has to put extra efforts to motivate herself for playing.“At 35, I am waking up with a couple of things that i don’t know where they’re coming from! I want to finish the season, to at least play untill the US Open,that is my goal.But I still have to take it week-to-week”said Sania who claims to suffer from wrist pain and knee injury.

Her journey was never less than a roller coaster ride on personal front from facing criticism for clothing choices to being trolled for marrying a Pakistani Cricketer she has always kept her trolls busy. But that couldn’t stop her from being what she is today.

Sania Mirza has added many feathers to her cap from ranking World No.1 in doubles on April 13 2015 to being the only female Indian player to win a WTA title of anykind. She won WTA finals twice in 2014 and 2015 with Cara Black and Martina Hingis respectively.

While she also has three Grand Slam titles in Mixed doubles. She won Australian Open (2009) French Open (2012) pairing with Mahesh Bhupati and (2014) US Open partnering Brazilian player Bruno Soares.

She also holds three Grand Slam titles in Womens doubles. 2015 Wimbledon and 2015 US Open and 2016 Australian Open parining with Martina Hingis.

Sania Mirza’s best career ranking in WTA was 27th while currently she is 68th on WTA ranking.
