Maulana Siraj-ul-Hasan, Former JIH Chief, Passes Away

Raichur: Former President (Ameer) of Jamaate-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Maulana Mohammed Siraj-ul-Hasan, has passed away today at about 6 pm in his hometown Raichur in Karnataka State. Maulana was the ameer-e-halqa  or state president of JIH Mysore (Karnataka) from 1st August,1958 to 6th April, 1984. Thereafter, he was appointed as secretary of all India JIH and held this post till he was elected as ameer or president for the term 1990-94. He was then re-elected president of the JIH for the terms 1995-99 and 2000-04. Prior to his appointment as all India president of the JIH, he also served as the acting president for about half a year.

He was instrumental in the formation of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and remained its vice president for several years. He was associated with other Muslim organisations such as All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat and All India Babri Masjid Coordination Committee. He has published several books on Islam and was popular for his oratory skills. He was considered an authority on Sharia in India. He was 88.
