Two farmers committed suicide in the district on Sunday. Ashok Reddy Chamale hanged himself from a neem tree in his field in Sastapur village in Basavakalyan taluk. The 46-year-old farmer had taken loans totalling Rs. 5.5 lakh from Krishna Grameena Bank and other agencies. He was upset that crops on his four-acre farm had failed for two years. He has a wife, five daughters and a son.
Police officials visited the village. A case has been registered at the Basavakalyan police station.
Dhondiba Madhavrao Wadekar (65) hanged himself in his field in Chikakchanda village in Bhalki taluk. He had taken around Rs. 1 lakh as loan, police said. His wife Narasabai complained to the Bhalki rural police station that he was dejected at the crop loss and delayed rains.
