Rahul Gandhi on Monday was elected unopposed president of the Indian National Congress.
“Eighty-nine nomination papers proposing the name of Shri Rahul Gandhi for Congress President have been received. All the nomination papers have been found valid,” the returning officer for the election, Mullappally Ramachandran, said in a statement.
Since the withdrawal date/time is over and there is only one candidate, as per Article XVIII (d) of the Constitution of the Indian National Congress, I hereby declare Shri Rahul Gandhi elected as President of the Indian National Congress,” the official AICC statement said.
Mr. Gandhi’s election comes in the midst of the Gujarat election, where the second phase of polling takes place on Thursday.
