Ragging or devilish torture? Keralite dalit student forced to drink toilet lotion

In yet another shameful incident of ragging, a Dalit student from Kerala was forced to drink toilet cleaner by her seniors. The girl, identified as Awasthi, was studying in Al Qamar College of Nursing located in Gulbarga near Bengaluru. The victim is admitted in Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. She is currently said to be in a highly critical condition.
The Dalit girl belongs to the backward Pulluvan Padiyil region of Kerala, falling under Edappal district. The 19-year-old was sent by her parents to Gulbarga to pursue the MBBS course in Al Qamar College.
The incident of ragging took place on May 9. A gang of eight seniors bullied Awasthi, and threatened her to drink toilet cleaner. Their mischief turned dangerous as Awasthi immediately began complaining about severe stomach pain. She was rushed to a private hospital in Gulbarga. Awasthi was sent back to Kerala by college authorities in the first week of June. She was then admitted in Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
Although the doctors treating her earlier suggested for a surgery to treat her gullet which has been damaged due to the chemical of toilet cleaner. However, they later decided to carry out a six-month long treatment before going in for the surgery.
Awasthi reportedly belongs to a family hailing from economically weaker background. She took admission in the medical college five months ago after taking loan from Kerala Gramin Bank (KGB). Her mother has appealed Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take stern action against the culprits.
