Yadgir|TheHindu-Deputy Commissioner J. Manjunath has promised to act in providing all basic facilities to the Neelakantarayanagaddi island in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district, with construction of a hanging bridge across the Krishna.
He was addressing residents of Island after inspecting the spot on Monday.
Mr. Manjunath, who is the first Deputy Commissioner to visit the island, said that there was a proposal to construct a hanging bridge across the Krishna, connecting the island with the mainland.
The cost of the project was estimated at Rs. 1.74 crore and has already been sanctioned. “Work will soon be commenced after the tender process was completed,” he said. The Deputy Commissioner also said that facilities like drinking water, sanitation, electricity supply and other civic works would be provided and grant for such works would be released separately.
Mr. Manjunath visited the primary school at the island and discussed with the staff about the facilities. “After the construction of the hanging bridge, the island will become a tourism spot,” he said. Residents of the island lose connectivity with the mainland for few days when the Narayaranapur dam water floods the island every rainy season.
