Gulbarga, DHNS: Sri Rama Sene working president and Karuneshwar Mutt pontiff Siddalinga Swami was arrested by police from the mutt premises in Andola in Jewargi taluk on Monday evening.
Sources in the police said, Swamiji had arrived to take partin a fair and was in Mutt when he was arrested. A senior police officer said that seer had cooperated with police in his arrest.
“Alarge number of people who had gathered on the mutt premises had opposed the arrest. Police were trying for the past six to seven hours to pacify the crowd and to arrest the seer but to no avail. Finally, the seer spoke to the people and asked them to cooperate and said he would be back soon,” sources said.
Had the seer not co-operated, the police might have had to resort to lathicharge o disperse the crowd at the mutt to arrest the seer and this could have led to tense situation, the officer said and added that luckily the seer co-operated. The officer said that the seer had been arrested in case pertaining to the abetment of attack on the members of a muslim family in Andola, a few days ago.
The seer had obtained bail in the case pertaining to the inflammatory speech during the immersion of Ganesha idols.
The seer is being brought to Kalaburagi and will be remanded in judicial custody, the officer said.
