Counselling centre at Rani Channamma University inaugurated

BELGAUM: It is wrong to look at the practice of seeking counselling and guidance as a sign of weakness. Rather, it should be seen as a sign of strength and wisdom said P Krishna Bhat, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Belgaum District.Speaking after inaugurating the counselling centre at Rani Channamma University’s department of social work, here on Friday he said, “Many leaders like Rama and Arjuna cited in Indian history and mythology could achieve success mainly because they knew when and from whom they should seek counselling services. It is not right to blame the corrupt system for lack of success as we have the examples of persons like C N R Rao, A P J Abdul Kalam, Barack Obama and Maya Angelou who have shown how one can overcome and even change the oppressive system with confidence and hard work”.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Anand Pandurangi who also spoke on the occasion said “Contemporary world requires every teacher and parent to know the basics of psychology and be a good counsellor, guide and friend to students/children. Every problem in human life can be solved or cured if it is diagnosed early and right treatment is made available”.

A special lecture on “Relevance of Counselling in Indian Higher Education Scenario” was delivered on the occasion by Vandita V. Chatapalli, counsellor, Belagavi. She enlightened the participants on various psychosocial issues affecting students and parents today and also provided them with practical insights into the theories and therapies useful in providing counselling and guidance services.
