The son of a daily wage earner from Bidar district who successfully cracked JEE (Advanced) is set to join IIT-Madras. But he doesn’t know how to raise nearly Rs 1 lakh in fees every year for the next five years. Sandeep Tukkunor is the first from Basavakalyan taluk to crack the Joint Entrance Examination, which guides admissions into storied technology institutes in the country. From Ghogga, a sleepy village in the district, he faced financial hurdles at every step in his school and college days until he was bailed out by deputy commissioners. Between them, his parents earn just enough to keep the kitchen fires burning: Father Hanumantappa digs and desilts wells, and mother Chandrakala is a farmhand.

Their meagre earnings should buy the family of five its bare essentials: Sandeep has two school-going brothers, and a sister in elementary school. Sandeep told TOI: “After Class V , I thought twice before continuing my studies because of grinding poverty .That was the time I attended a ‘talent search’ exam conducted by the district administration led by Harsha Gupta. I scored well, studied at Shakuntala Patil English-Medium School at Humnabad without paying a penny. I secured 8.8% CGPA in Class X.”Before joining college, Sandeep had decided to take a break, help his family with additional income and return to studies.
